DIP INTO BRITTANY

Brittany’s capital of Rennes is a fascinating mix of eclectic architecture, historical heritage, grand squares and glorious gardens.

 

With a number of charming half-timbered houses and narrow medieval streets, the wonderful Italian Mosaics « Odorico”, significant ornamentals on some houses. Their market on Saturday morning is ample, actually the second in France. The impressive Parliament building is an exquisite example of 17th century Grand Royal Parisian décor.

 

Though not a large wine producer, Brittany is renowned for the quality and variety of its seafood due to its extraordinary coastline. Cancale oysters and scallops. It is also famous for a whole range of wonderful dishes from the famous galette buckwheat pancake, to the “Far Briton”, a local custard cake with prunes. The mussels and lobsters of Brittany are considered the best in the world. The region is also known for its artichokes, ciders and local cheeses as well as its locally produced calvados or “eau de vie” – the water of life! But best known for its BUTTER!!

  • Visit Malouinière de la Ville Bague to discover an authentic house of privateers and malouins shipowners of the eighteenth century.

  • Morbihan is bristling with extraordinary granite monuments: the megalithic stones.

  • Walk among the mythical standing stones of Carnac standing stones. A total of 3,000 menhirs standing in straight lines over 4 km and 40 hectares, which date from 4000BC. The granite stones were erected on the spot where they were dug, hence the differing sizes, although it is not known why they were put up...
